Short Board Games
We all enjoy playing games, but sometimes busy schedules don’t allow for long strategy or board games. Quick games offer a fun way to enjoy ourselves without needing hours of free time. Here are three of my favorite fast-paced games: Nam Desh Ful Fol, UNO, and Shiritori. They’re easy to set up, addictive, and perfect for short bursts of fun.
Nam Desh Ful Fol
This simple and exciting word game is popular in Bangladesh. It challenges players to think fast and recall names from different categories.
How to Play
Players sit in a circle or around a table.
A letter is chosen at random, either by someone calling it out or using a spinner.
Everyone must quickly list four words starting with that letter:
Nam (Name) – A person’s name
Desh (Country) – A country
Ful (Flower) – A flower
Fol (Fruit) – A fruit
The first player to finish yells “Done!”
Others check their answers. Invalid words lose points.
The player with the most valid answers wins.
Why It’s Great
Encourages quick thinking and boosts vocabulary.
Can be played anytime with just a paper or even verbally.
Easily customizable by adding more categories like animals or cities.
UNO
UNO is a light-hearted card game with simple rules and surprising depth. It’s great for groups and can be played quickly.
How to Play
Deal 7 cards to each player.
Place the remaining cards in a draw pile. Flip one card to start the discard pile.
Players take turns matching the top card in color, number, or symbol.
Special cards like Skip, Reverse, Draw Two, and Wild keep things exciting.
When a player has one card left, they must say “UNO!”
The first to play all cards wins the round. Others’ remaining cards count as points.
Why It’s Great
Each round takes only 5–10 minutes.
Easy to learn, but has room for strategy.
Supports 2 to 10 players.
Want to speed it up? Reduce starting cards or set a time limit per turn.
Shiritori
This traditional Japanese word game is fast, fun, and perfect for building vocabulary.
How to Play
Players take turns saying a word.
Each new word must begin with the last letter of the previous word.
No repeating words.
Add extra rules for more challenge, like using only foods or animals.
The game ends when someone makes a mistake or can’t think of a word.
Why It’s Great
Needs no setup or materials.
Great for learning and improving language skills.
You can add a timer to speed things up and boost the challenge.
Final Thoughts
Nam Desh Ful Fol, UNO, and Shiritori offer quick, easy fun with little to no setup. They’re ideal for short breaks at school, during commutes, or in between work tasks. These games aren’t just time-fillers—they build creativity, thinking speed, and social connection.
